Interim Assistant Head Teacher – Safeguarding & Pastoral Lead

About the role

An established specialist school in Leyland seeks an experienced Interim Assistant Head Teacher to lead safeguarding, pastoral care and behaviour management on a fixed‑term basis.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and oversee safeguarding practice in line with statutory guidance, acting as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
• Provide strategic leadership for pastoral support, pupil wellbeing and behaviour management.
• Collaborate with families, external agencies and professionals to achieve positive outcomes for pupils.
• Develop, support and manage a high‑performing team of staff.
• Promote an inclusive, supportive and positive school culture.

Required profile

• Minimum three years of recent, relevant experience in a leadership or safeguarding role.
• Previous experience as a Designated Safeguarding Lead.
• Valid Level 3 Safeguarding qualification.
• Experience coordinating Early Help Assessments and managing behaviour and pastoral programmes.
• Proven track record of leading and managing teams.
• Strong communication, organisational and problem‑solving abilities.

Required skills

• Knowledge of the Thrive Trauma‑Informed Approach (desirable).
• Team Teach certification (desirable).
