Lead Software Engineer

About the role

The Lead Software Engineer will drive technical delivery for a critical national infrastructure programme. Based in Farnborough with flexible home‑working, you will shape both the sustainment of existing systems and the creation of new capabilities for a central government customer.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across the software team, collaborating with architects and guiding implementation decisions.
• Design, develop, debug, test, document and deploy Java‑based backend services and APIs.
• Ensure adherence to coding standards, code‑review processes and quality gates throughout the project lifecycle.
• Own the CI/CD pipeline, guaranteeing continuous validation, security scanning and operational readiness.
• Analyse system flows, data usage and business processes to translate requirements into practical solutions.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading software development teams in complex, high‑availability environments.
• Strong understanding of software engineering best practices and operational risk management.
• Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to both engineers and non‑technical stakeholders.
