Learning Support Assistant – Support Students with SEMH

About the role

Join a dedicated team at a Pupil Referral Unit in Southend, supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. You will work alongside experienced staff to create a safe, engaging learning environment for students who require additional support.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group assistance to students during lessons.
• Help manage behaviour and encourage active participation in learning activities.
• Build trusting, supportive relationships with pupils to promote wellbeing and progress.
• Collaborate with teachers and support staff to implement personalised learning plans.

Required profile

• A positive, resilient and proactive attitude.
• Strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Genuine interest in supporting young people with additional needs.
• Experience in social care, support work or SEND is beneficial but not essential.

Required skills

• Basic understanding of safeguarding procedures.
• Ability to follow guidance on behaviour management.
• Willingness to undertake DBS checks and safeguarding training.
