Maintenance Electrician – HMP Hindley (North West England)

About the role

We are looking for a qualified Maintenance Electrician to join the HM Prison Service at HMP Hindley. The role is full‑time, 39 hours per week on a 1‑in‑3 weekend pattern, and offers the chance to work on a diverse range of domestic electrical systems within a secure environment.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out planned and preventative electrical maintenance across the prison estate.
• Diagnose and replace failed domestic electrical components.
• Respond promptly to breakdowns, following the appropriate Safe System of Work.
• Fault‑find and resolve issues on electrical systems in accordance with IET Wiring Regulations.
• Perform electrical installations based on design specifications and the 18th Edition BS7671 standards.
• Test and inspect installations to ensure compliance with current regulations.
• Monitor stock levels and order critical spares for electrical services.

Required profile

• Relevant technical qualifications such as City & Guilds 2365 (parts 1‑3), BTEC or NVQ Level 3 or higher.
• Full knowledge of BS7671 IET Wiring Regulations (18th Edition) and Electricity at Work Regulations.
• Ability to work at heights safely.
• Eligibility to obtain full prison security clearance and an enhanced DBS check.
• Valid passport or full birth certificate with photo, and a current driving licence.
• Proof of National Insurance number and recent proof of address.
• At least two satisfactory employment references.
