Mental Health Assistant (SEN Teaching Assistant) – Slough

About the role
This full‑time position supports children aged 4‑11 with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs in a specialist school in Slough. It is designed for recent graduates, particularly those studying psychology, counselling, criminology or related fields, who wish to gain hands‑on experience alongside qualified therapists and psychologists.
Key responsibilities
- Provide one‑to‑one and group support to SEN pupils with behavioural and mental health challenges.
- Assist classroom teachers in delivering tailored learning activities and behaviour management plans.
- Shadow and observe therapy sessions, taking notes to develop understanding of therapeutic techniques.
- Help maintain a safe, calm and inclusive classroom environment.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary staff to monitor progress and adjust support strategies.
Required profile
- Recent graduate (Level 3 qualification minimum; degree in psychology, counselling, criminology or related subject preferred).
- Enthusiastic, resilient and able to work proactively with challenging behaviour.
- Strong interest in child mental health and special educational needs.
- Willingness to learn from qualified therapists and psychologists.
- Availability to start as soon as possible or in September.
Required skills
- Level 3 qualifications (e.g., NVQ) or higher.
- Basic understanding of SEMH concepts and child safeguarding.
What we offer
- Daily rate of £90‑£110 (visible to candidates only).
- Full‑time schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:30 am‑4:00 pm.
- Mentoring and shadowing opportunities with experienced therapists and psychologists.
- Valuable experience working with children with complex mental health needs.
