Pre-Registration Genetic Counsellor – NHS Scotland

About the role

The South East Scotland Genetic Service is seeking a full‑time Pre‑Registration Genetic Counsellor to join its Edinburgh team. This Band 7 annex 21 post forms part of the NHS Scotland postgraduate training scheme, leading to registration as a Clinical Scientist – Genomic Counsellor.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver genetic and genomic counselling services under supervision, including outreach clinics.
• Participate in a blended training programme that combines workplace learning with a part‑time MSc in Genetic & Genomic Counselling.
• Build a portfolio of evidence for assessment and professional registration.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure high‑quality patient care.

Required profile

• Eligibility for Clinical Scientist Genetic Counselling training.
• Minimum 2:1 BSc (Hons) in a relevant discipline (e.g., biological science, biomedical science, social science, nursing, psychology) or equivalent nursing/midwifery experience.
• At least 6 months full‑time equivalent (≈800 hrs) NHS or community health experience, with references.
• Commitment to commence training in September 2026 and complete the registration portfolio within 36 months.

• Ability to communicate complex information to patients and families.
