Pre‑Registration Genetic Counsellor – Band 7 (Scotland)

About the role

The South East Scotland Genetic Service is seeking a full‑time Pre‑Registration Genetic Counsellor to join its Edinburgh team. You will be enrolled in the NHS Scotland postgraduate training scheme, working under supervision while delivering a comprehensive clinical genetics service.

Key responsibilities

• Provide genetic counselling to patients and families across a range of clinical settings.
• Participate in outreach clinics and multidisciplinary team meetings.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of patient records and service documentation.
• Engage in the three‑year, fully funded MSc in Genetic & Genomic Counselling (part‑time, distance learning).
• Complete required training blocks, including an initial on‑site block in Wales (28 Sept – 7 Oct 2026).

Required profile

• Eligibility for Clinical Scientist Genetic Counselling training.
• Minimum 2:1 BSc (Hons) in a relevant discipline (biological/biomedical science, social science, nursing, psychology) or qualified NMC nurse/midwife with relevant experience.
• At least 6 months full‑time equivalent (≈800 hrs) NHS, community health, or care experience, supported by references.
• Commitment to complete the registration portfolio within a maximum of 36 months.

Required skills

• Knowledge of genetic and genomic counselling principles.
