Principal Mechanical Engineer – London or Newcastle

About the role

RED Specialist Services is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead large‑scale mechanical and electrical projects from our London or Newcastle offices. You will act as the primary client liaison, delivering high‑quality design, coordination and technical solutions across a variety of building types.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage large engineering projects, ensuring timely delivery and client satisfaction.
• Develop, specify and coordinate mechanical and electrical installations, controls, instruments and operating systems.
• Conduct surveys, testing and dilapidation reports on existing installations.
• Ensure manufacturing, construction and testing meet functional specifications and customer requirements.
• Make day‑to‑day decisions on project progress and provide expert advice to clients.
• Represent RED at technical meetings with customers, professional teams and contractors.
• Validate engineering calculations and drawings against industry and legal standards.
• Coordinate all engineering services and adopt holistic engineering concepts.

Required profile

• BSc/BEng in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
• MCIBSE/MIEE or HND/HNC with appropriate experience, working towards Chartered Engineer status.
• Extensive experience in specification design for multiple building types.
• Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and UK building regulations.
• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel) and IT‑based calculation/spreadsheet tools.
• Ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines and present technical information.
• Background in consulting or construction preferred.
