Principal Tailings Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Principal Tailings Engineer to lead the design, assessment and management of tailings storage facilities and mine‑waste projects for a leading international engineering consultancy. You will work within a multidisciplinary team of geotechnical, civil and mining specialists, delivering solutions from feasibility through to closure on high‑profile global projects.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and assessment of tailings storage facilities and mine‑waste infrastructure.
• Deliver geotechnical and civil engineering solutions across all project stages, from feasibility to detailed design and closure.
• Conduct stability assessments, seepage analysis and dam safety reviews.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to project teams.
• Manage client relationships and act as a trusted technical advisor.
• Prepare and review technical reports, design calculations and specifications.
• Support business development and contribute to winning new work.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers and consultants.

Required profile

• Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Geological Engineering or related discipline.
• Chartered status (CEng or equivalent) preferred.
• Extensive experience in tailings engineering, mine‑waste management or geotechnical design.
• Strong understanding of tailings storage facility design, construction and operation.
• Experience with geotechnical analyses and numerical modelling.
• Proven project management and client‑facing experience.
• Excellent communication and report‑writing skills.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams on complex international projects.
