Project Supervisor – Kemble (Archaeology)

About the role

The Project Supervisor leads specified fieldwork projects, ensuring performance targets are met, archaeological recording is of high quality, and health and safety standards are upheld. The role also supports the supervision of larger, more complex projects under senior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver own fieldwork projects on time, within budget, and to required quality and H&S standards.
• Develop archaeologists and trainees through performance reviews, feedback, toolbox talks and coaching.
• Ensure the quality of archaeological understanding and site records, and assist in compiling archives.
• Author typescript fieldwork reports accurately and efficiently.
• Monitor project progress and report regularly on budget, logistics, staff and H&S issues to senior managers.
• Maintain accurate administrative records, including timesheets and equipment logs.
• Assist with pre‑project planning, scheme preparation, utility notifications and landowner liaison.

Required profile

• Sound knowledge of archaeological practice across all British periods.
• Experience supervising small to medium fieldwork projects, including evaluations and excavations.
• Ability to organise, motivate, train and appraise staff.
• Good working knowledge of health and safety legislation and related documentation.
• Effective communication with sponsors, clients and external officers.

Required skills

• CSCS Health and Safety Card (or ability to pass the CITB HS&E Operatives/Managers Test).
• Full driving licence with ability to operate 4x4 vehicles and transit vans.
• CIfA membership at PCIfA level (or commitment to join).
