Public Law Solicitor – Civil Liberties & Judicial Review

About the role

Our client, a top‑tier law firm recognised by The Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners, is seeking an experienced Public Law Solicitor to join its highly successful Public Law department in London. You will work on complex civil‑liberties and judicial‑review matters for both publicly and privately funded clients.

Key responsibilities

• Report directly to the Department Director and take ownership of all aspects of public‑law work.
• Provide technical legal expertise and guidance to team members.
• Supervise solicitors, trainee solicitors and caseworkers, managing caseloads of varying complexity.
• Deliver training and development initiatives within the department.
• Handle a wide range of public‑law matters, including unlawful detention, false imprisonment, abuse by detention staff, removal‑escort issues, and judicial reviews against HMRC, local authorities, the NHS and planning bodies.
• Obtain emergency orders and interim relief to prevent human‑rights breaches.
• Pursue damages actions in County and High Courts and manage appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor with substantial experience in public law, civil liberties and judicial review.
• Proven track record of high success rates in complex litigation.
• Ability to manage and mentor junior legal staff.
• Strong understanding of immigration and civil‑liberties challenges.
• Recognition by professional bodies such as Chambers & Partners or The Legal 500 is desirable.
