Purchase Ledger Manager – Lead Accounts Payable Team

About the role

Our client, a well‑established organisation in Bristol, is looking for a proactive Purchase Ledger Manager to lead its busy Accounts Payable function. Reporting to the Finance Manager, Financial Reporting, you will oversee the end‑to‑end purchase ledger process and manage a small team of three Accounts Assistants.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, motivate and develop a team of three Purchase Ledger Accounts Assistants.
• Oversee the full accounts payable cycle, ensuring accurate and timely processing of supplier invoices and payments.
• Maintain strong supplier relationships and resolve escalated queries.
• Reconcile supplier accounts regularly and investigate outstanding items.
• Ensure robust financial controls and compliance with organisational policies.
• Support month‑end and year‑end activities, including accruals, reconciliations and audit requirements.
• Monitor workload, performance and service levels within the Purchase Ledger team.
• Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
• Collaborate with budget holders and stakeholders to provide guidance and support.
• Contribute to finance projects, system enhancements and departmental objectives.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a Purchase Ledger Manager, Accounts Payable Manager or similar supervisory role.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and develop finance team members.
• Strong knowledge of accounts payable processes and internal controls.
• Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Effective communication and relationship‑building abilities.
• Ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
