Research Laboratory Technician (volcanology, fluid dynamics & rheology)

About the role

An exciting opportunity exists for a research laboratory technician to join the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC). You will work within and support the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) Laboratories and Dr. Jones' research team, contributing to world‑class volcanology and planetary science experiments.

Key responsibilities

• Support the design, installation, operation and safe running of a wide range of laboratory equipment in the GFD Laboratories.
• Provide data collection and measurement services for ongoing research grants, including texture and granulometric analysis, image analysis and rheometry experiments.

Required profile

• Previous laboratory experience with at least one of the listed research themes (e.g., pyroclast analysis, high‑speed video image analysis, rheometry or high‑temperature experimentation).
• Ability to work flexibly on a full‑time or part‑time basis and adapt to the needs of the GFD team.

Required skills

• Operation of high‑speed cameras, tensiometers, liquid density meters and viscometers.
• Use of extensional, powder and rotational rheometers, including oscillatory and granular modes.
• High‑temperature furnace operation (>1000 °C) and related rheometry.
• Particle size, shape and density characterization, and image analysis of high‑speed video and SEM images.
