SEN Teaching Assistant – Support Pupils with SEMH

About the role

This permanent, full‑time position is based in a welcoming mainstream primary school in Grays, Thurrock. You will work alongside the class teacher and SEND team to provide dedicated support for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them feel safe, understood and ready to learn.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group assistance to pupils with SEMH and additional learning needs.
• Help children develop emotional regulation, confidence and positive coping strategies.
• Build trusting relationships that enable pupils to feel secure and valued.
• Support pupils to engage positively with learning and classroom routines.
• Apply positive behaviour management techniques to encourage appropriate behaviours.
• Collaborate closely with teachers, the SEND team and parents to ensure consistent support.
• Celebrate progress and assist pupils in achieving their individual goals.

Required profile

• Calm, patient and resilient with a genuine passion for helping every child succeed.
• Experience supporting children with SEMH, SEND or behavioural needs.
• Understanding that behaviour often communicates unmet needs.
• Ability to build positive, professional relationships with pupils and staff.
• Confidence using positive behaviour management strategies.
• Team‑player who works well within a supportive school environment.
