Senior AI Automation Engineer

About the role

A major UK company is looking for a Senior AI Automation Engineer to join its growing specialist AI engineering capability. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on designing and delivering production-grade AI applications, intelligent agents and automated workflows in a large, governed enterprise environment. You will work across Microsoft Copilot, Python, Power Platform and Azure, moving beyond proof-of-concept into real-world production use. The role is based in London or Birmingham, hybrid with three days per week in the office.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build AI agents and multi-step automated workflows
• Develop production-grade Python services, APIs and automation pipelines
• Build solutions using Microsoft Copilot Studio and Power Platform
• Orchestrate workflows across Copilot Studio, Azure AI / Azure AI Foundry and internal enterprise systems
• Integrate AI applications with existing platforms via REST/GraphQL APIs and event-driven architectures
• Develop reusable connectors, tools, services and agent capabilities, and design agent orchestration and tool-use patterns
• Build CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks, and deploy and monitor AI applications in production
• Ensure solutions are scalable, observable, secure and maintainable
• Lead technical design discussions and code reviews, help set engineering standards and support junior engineers

Required profile

• Experienced engineer combining strong software engineering fundamentals with practical experience delivering AI and automation solutions
• Experience building and deploying production AI/LLM applications, agents or AI-powered workflows
• Experience designing reusable services, connectors and integration components
• Understanding of agentic AI patterns, orchestration, tool use, prompt design and LLM limitations

Required skills

• Strong commercial Python, including APIs, testing, modular architecture and asynchronous processing
• Microsoft Copilot / Copilot Studio and Power Platform
• Azure OpenAI, Azure AI / AI Foundry or comparable AI platforms; Azure Functions, containers and AI services
• REST and/or GraphQL, Docker, Kubernetes or Azure Container Apps
• CI/CD, Git and automated testing
• Production monitoring, reliability and observability
• MCP or similar integration patterns, AI governance, prompt evaluation/versioning, event-driven systems or highly regulated environments are particularly valuable
