Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

Octopus Energy is scaling its digital platform to accelerate the green energy transition. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Flexibility team, you will help build the next generation of products that make energy more flexible for millions of customers.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain high‑performance backend services for flagship products such as Intelligent Octopus, Saving Sessions and large‑scale battery management.
• Implement micro‑service architectures that handle high‑transaction volumes and ensure reliability at scale.
• Collaborate with product, data, marketing and operations teams to deliver features quickly and safely.
• Operate and optimise cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP or Azure) and manage relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL).
• Mentor junior developers and promote best practices in code quality, security and performance.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional experience in backend web application development.
• Self‑motivated, able to work autonomously in a fast‑changing environment.
• Strong team player who enjoys cross‑functional collaboration and coaching junior engineers.
• Passion for solving social and environmental challenges through technology.
