Senior Housing Benefits Appeals Officer

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Housing Benefits Appeals Officer to join a local authority team on a contract basis. The role is primarily home‑based, with occasional attendance at the office and regular Tribunal hearings. You will work Monday‑Friday, 9 am‑5 pm, delivering specialist support for complex Housing Benefit appeals.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of Housing Benefit appeals from initial reconsideration through escalation and Tribunal stages.
• Prepare and submit detailed appeal documentation and legal submissions.
• Represent the council at Tribunal hearings and liaise with legal representatives.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with legislation and policy.
• Maintain accurate case records, meet strict deadlines, and monitor progress against statutory requirements.

Required profile

• Significant recent experience working specifically within Housing Benefit appeals.
• Proven ability to prepare appeal submissions, reconsiderations, and to attend Tribunal hearings.
• Strong knowledge of Housing Benefit regulations, policies, and appeal procedures.
• Capability to manage complex caseloads independently and meet tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
