About the role
We are looking for a Senior Optics Technician to join our Quantum Infrastructure team. You will work on cutting‑edge trapped‑ion quantum computers, building and commissioning the optics and laser subsystems that power these machines.
Key responsibilities
- Assemble, align and commission optical and laser components for quantum systems.
- Support engineers and scientists during system builds, upgrades, maintenance and research projects.
- Manage stock control, purchasing and supplier relationships for optical parts.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation.
- Ensure a tidy, safe laboratory and workshop environment, adhering to laser‑safety protocols.
Required profile
- Minimum ~3 years of industrial operations experience in a laboratory setting.
- Hands‑on experience with lasers, optics, fibre‑optics and electrical wiring.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
- Experience using microscopes and handling fine, delicate components.
- Formal engineering qualifications (e.g., Level 3 Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship or Level 4 HNC) are advantageous.
Required skills
- Lasers and laser safety (Class 4) handling.
- Optics and fibre‑optics assembly.
- Electrical wiring and electronic subsystem assembly, including fault finding and continuity testing.
- Mechanical and electrical drawing interpretation.
- Microscope operation and fine‑part handling.
- High‑precision/delicate part assembly and optical alignment.
- Scientific instrumentation assembly and testing.
- Strong IT skills for documentation and stock management.
