Software Engineer – 5G NR PHY Development

About the role

We are partnering with an innovative technology business at the forefront of 5G and wireless communications. The successful Software Engineer will join a growing team in Southampton, focusing on developing and optimising software that underpins 5G NR physical layer (PHY) systems. This role offers the chance to work close to hardware and tackle challenging performance problems.

Key responsibilities

• Develop software to run and test 5G NR PHY algorithms.
• Optimise platform‑specific code for embedded systems, applying SIMD, multi‑threading and hardware acceleration techniques.
• Integrate PHY algorithms with ARM‑based platforms and boards.
• Maintain and improve continuous‑integration testing across the platform.
• Support interoperability testing with customers, vendors and operators.
• Collaborate closely with hardware, system architecture and system‑test teams.
• Participate in technical reviews and customer‑facing activities.

Required profile

• Strong experience in C or C++ development.
• Proficiency with a scripting language such as Python, Groovy or Bash.
• Solid software engineering fundamentals and a keen interest in performance optimisation.
• Experience with real‑time embedded systems and Linux is desirable.
• Knowledge of SIMD, FPGA or DSP‑based hardware acceleration is a plus.
• Understanding of signal processing and optimisation techniques.
• Familiarity with FPGA toolchains (e.g., Xilinx Vivado) and O‑RAN architecture, including eCPRI, is advantageous.
• Experience working with ARM‑based platforms.
