Teaching Assistant – Specialist Autism School (St Albans)

About the role
We are recruiting Teaching Assistants for a newly opened specialist autism school in St Albans. The role starts in September and supports children aged 4‑16 with autism, speech, language, communication needs, developmental delay and social development challenges.
Key responsibilities
- Support classroom learning for small groups (7‑10 pupils) and individual pupils.
- Assist pupils with communication development, using tools such as PECS and Makaton.
- Promote independence, emotional regulation and positive behaviour.
- Work alongside experienced SEN teachers, therapists and other teaching assistants.
- Help create a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment.
Required profile
- Experience supporting children or young people with special needs, preferably in a primary or special‑needs setting.
- Understanding of autism and additional needs.
- Familiarity with the EYFS or primary curriculum.
- Positive, energetic attitude with a willingness to learn new skills.
- Caring, patient and enthusiastic approach.
