Temporary Finance Officer – Primary School (Wigan)

About the role

We are partnering with a welcoming primary school in Wigan to find an experienced Finance Officer for a short‑term, full‑time assignment. The role starts in September and will support the school’s finance function during a busy period for approximately 4‑6 weeks.

Key responsibilities

• Process purchase orders, invoices and supplier payments.
• Reconcile accounts and maintain accurate financial records.
• Monitor expenditure against budgets and assist with financial reporting.
• Manage school income, including trips, dinner money and other payments.
• Support payroll administration and liaise with external providers.
• Maintain financial databases and ensure records are up‑to‑date.
• Assist with month‑end finance processes and general administrative duties.
• Ensure compliance with school financial procedures and audit requirements.

Required profile

• Previous experience in a school finance, finance officer, accounts assistant or similar role.
• Familiarity with school finance systems such as SIMS FMS, PS Financials or equivalent.
• Strong knowledge of invoicing, reconciliations and budget monitoring.
• Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
• Willingness to obtain an enhanced DBS on the update service.
