Ward Sister / Charge Nurse – Days & Nights Rotation

About the role

We are seeking a Ward Sister / Charge Nurse to join the surgical team at Oaks Hospital, Colchester. The role operates on a days and nights rotation, delivering high‑quality clinical care to patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures.

Key responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care to surgical patients, ensuring adherence to clinical standards.
• Lead the ward in the absence of the Ward Manager, overseeing daily operations and staff performance.
• Contribute to service development across the peri‑operative pathway by applying evidence‑based practice.
• Manage a mixed surgical case load and support the multidisciplinary team.
• Participate in on‑call duties and maintain a safe, blame‑free culture.

Required profile

• Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
• Demonstrated clinical competence and leadership experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Strong customer service orientation and flexibility for on‑call work.

• Computer skills.
