Youth Worker – Support for Children with Social & Emotional Needs

About the role

We are seeking a dedicated Youth Worker to join an alternative specialist school in Wokingham that supports children aged 8‑16 with social, emotional and mental health needs. The role focuses on building trusting relationships, promoting wellbeing and helping students develop positive life choices within a compassionate, values‑based environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one and group support to students experiencing anxiety, school refusal, trauma‑related challenges or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyscalculia.
• Use de‑escalation techniques, positive reinforcement and restorative practice to manage behaviour and foster a safe learning atmosphere.
• Collaborate with psychologists, therapists and teaching staff to tailor interventions and monitor progress.
• Assist in delivering personalised educational plans that address emotional, social and academic goals.
• Maintain accurate records of student interactions and outcomes.

Required profile

• Relevant degree (e.g., psychology, social work, youth work) or demonstrable experience working with young people in similar settings.
• Resilience and an open‑minded approach to supporting children who have experienced trauma.
• Ability to build rapport quickly and communicate effectively with students, families and staff.

Required skills

• De‑escalation and conflict‑resolution techniques.
• Positive reinforcement and restorative practice methods.
