Assistant Psychologist – Adult Mental Health (Band 4)

About the role

The Assistant Psychologist role provides recent psychology graduates with paid, hands‑on experience in adult and older‑adult inpatient mental health services. Working under supervision, you will contribute to trauma‑informed care, therapeutic interventions and multidisciplinary team activities.

Key responsibilities

• Support the embedding of trauma‑informed approaches across wards, including case formulation write‑ups, training delivery and data collection.
• Assist in developing and delivering intervention plans for service users under the guidance of a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist.
• Coordinate and run therapeutic groups, acting as an integrated member of multidisciplinary teams.
• Contribute to the development of a psychologically based framework of care across all service settings.

Required profile

• Honours degree in Psychology (minimum 2:1) with eligibility for BPS graduate membership.
• Ability to work independently, reliably and consistently, managing workload with regular supervision.
• High‑level written and verbal communication skills, especially in emotive or sensitive contexts.
• Understanding of applying psychological knowledge within a mental health environment.
• Capability to interact effectively with service users, carers and staff from all disciplines.

Required skills

• Microsoft Excel for data handling and analysis.
• SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) for data analysis.
