About the role

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Theoretical Physics, starting on 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is initially a five‑year probationary appointment, leading to a permanent role up to the retirement age, subject to satisfactory performance.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver undergraduate and Masters‑level lectures, including contributions to the Part III Mathematics theoretical physics courses.
  • Provide student feedback, career and pastoral advice, and undertake examination duties.
  • Develop and lead independent research programmes in fundamental theoretical physics.
  • Identify funding opportunities, prepare grant applications and manage research projects.
  • Publish research findings, present at conferences and collaborate with national and international colleagues.

Profile

  • PhD in Mathematics, Physics or a closely related discipline.
  • Outstanding record of research in fundamental theoretical physics (or closely related areas).
  • Demonstrated ability to teach at undergraduate and Masters level.
  • Experience in securing research funding and managing grants (for Associate level).
