Autism Support Teaching Assistant

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Autism Support Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in Rochdale. The role involves providing dedicated 1:1 and small‑group support to pupils with autism, helping them access learning, develop communication skills and engage confidently in school life.

Key responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small‑group support for pupils with autism.
• Assist pupils in accessing learning activities and classroom routines.
• Use autism‑friendly strategies to promote engagement.
• Support communication, social interaction and emotional regulation.
• Implement behaviour support plans and agreed intervention strategies.
• Help pupils manage transitions, routines and challenging situations.
• Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs and wider support staff.
• Promote independence, confidence and positive outcomes.

Required profile

• Previous experience supporting pupils with autism.
• Strong understanding of autistic children’s needs.
• Experience implementing strategies for communication and emotional regulation.
• Excellent relationship‑building skills and ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
• Team Teach training or comparable de‑escalation and positive handling qualification.
• Full‑time availability, Monday to Friday, term‑time only.
• Eligibility to work in the UK and fluent spoken and written English.
• Willingness to complete safeguarding and vetting checks.

What we offer

• Pay up to £120 per day, dependent on experience.
