Band 5 Staff Nurse – Discharge Lounge (Fixed‑Term)

About the role

An experienced Band 5 Staff Nurse is required to join the Discharge Lounge team at University Hospitals Birmingham on a fixed‑term basis covering maternity leave until 31 May 2027. The role involves managing a high‑throughput area where patients spend an average of two hours before discharge, requiring flexibility and autonomous decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and screen patients suitable for the Discharge Lounge to improve patient flow.
• Complete transfer of care documents, patient transport requests and ensure timely discharge paperwork.
• Communicate clearly with patients, families and multidisciplinary teams.
• Provide safe, compassionate, person‑centred nursing care in line with evidence‑based practice.
• Supervise and support junior staff and oversee the ward when required.

Required profile

• Qualified nurse with Band 5 registration and experience in acute care.
• Demonstrated ability to self‑manage time and professional development.
• Commitment to delivering dignified, non‑judgmental care that respects diversity.
• Willingness to work collaboratively with health and social care professionals.

Required skills

• Clinical knowledge relevant to discharge planning and patient flow.
• Accurate and legible documentation, both paper‑based and electronic.
• Ability to coordinate nursing interventions and monitor quality of care.
