Base Operations Assistant

About the role

The Base Operations Assistant supports BBC facilities by ensuring equipment and spaces are ready when needed. You will work on‑site in Manchester, coordinating the movement, set‑up and safety of a wide range of technical assets.

Key responsibilities

• Load and unload equipment and vehicles safely, following established procedures.
• Check equipment in and out using the BBC’s allocation and stock‑control systems.
• Set up studios and facilities for bookings, arranging chairs, stages and other required items.
• Arrange and optimise the movement of equipment between BBC locations and outside broadcast sites.
• Allocate equipment, resolve shortages, and advise operational staff of any unresolved issues.
• Act as the primary contact for operational staff, freelancers and other stakeholders.
• Supervise activities within defined parameters when senior staff are absent.
• Plan and organise transport of rostra, stage furniture and other large items.
• Maintain cleaning schedules for studios and technical areas.
• Ensure all equipment, including vehicle‑mounted units, is issued in a safe condition and that test documentation is up‑to‑date.
• Monitor consumable stock levels and request replenishment via purchasing systems.
• Drive BBC or hire vehicles in compliance with regulations and internal policies.
• Participate in project work under direction and uphold health‑and‑safety standards.

Required profile

• Understanding of operational requirements for facilities and equipment.
• Familiarity with purchasing, stock‑control and equipment allocation processes.
• Good knowledge of the equipment used in BBC studios and outside broadcast environments.
• Awareness of safety, welfare and regulatory guidelines relevant to base operations.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative and act responsibly when senior staff are not present.
