Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant (Special Educational Needs)

About the role

We are seeking a dedicated Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Banbury. You will work with pupils aged 11‑16 who have a range of special educational needs, supporting both their learning and mental health. This is a graduate‑level opportunity that also welcomes experienced teaching assistants.

Key responsibilities

• Assist pupils in staying focused and on task during lessons.
• Manage and de‑escalate challenging behaviour in the classroom.
• Help students understand and process their emotions, promoting emotional wellbeing.
• Support a variety of alternative learning activities such as arts and crafts, outdoor projects and cooking.
• Collaborate with teachers and support staff to create a safe, inclusive learning environment.

Required profile

• Graduate in Psychology, Criminology, or related field, or proven experience as a Teaching Assistant.
• Enthusiastic and passionate about mental health and special educational needs.
• Experience working with children (voluntary work, babysitting, sports, etc.) is essential.
• Experience with challenging behaviour is highly beneficial.

Required skills

• No specific technical skills required.
