BHF Multidisciplinary Doctoral Training Programme (Secondary Prevention of Vascular Disease)
University of Cambridge
Job description
About the role
The University of Cambridge, in collaboration with the University of Oxford, is inviting applications for the second intake of its 4-year BHF Multidisciplinary Doctoral Training Programme, focused on secondary prevention of vascular dysfunction and disease. It trains cardiovascular scientists to develop cross-disciplinary approaches to halt, stabilise and reverse vascular disease in high-risk patients. Students join either Oxford (up to 8 studentships) or Cambridge (2 studentships) and receive co-supervision and access to shared research infrastructure.
Key responsibilities
- Work across four research themes: defining disease through deep phenotyping and imaging; elucidating mechanisms and biomarkers using multi-omics and genetics; modulating cell death and inflammation; and maintaining vascular stability through cell biology, biomechanics and regenerative approaches.
- In Year 1 complete core research and specialist training, plus two 12-week laboratory rotations in complementary disciplines, then progress to a three-year main research project.
- Take part in cross-institutional symposia and cohort activities, and engage with pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners.
- Optionally train in entrepreneurship, innovation and commercial translation.
Required profile
- A first or upper second-class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as biochemistry, biomedical sciences, bioengineering or a related life science.
- UK residency requirements (home fees); international students who can cover overseas tuition through other scholarships may also be considered.
- Applications are made online through the Cambridge postgraduate portal by 8 December 2026, with interviews in early January 2027.
What we offer
- Fully funded 4-year studentship with a tax-free stipend at the standard BHF rate (£21,747 per year, rising over 4 years).
- Home-rate university tuition fees, consumables budget, travel allowance for conferences and funds to visit partners.
- Training in core research, rotations, and exposure to industry partners.
