Biomedical Scientist – Medical Microbiology (Band 6/5)

About the role

This position offers an exciting opportunity to join one of England’s largest microbiology departments, delivering high‑level microbiological analysis to support patient diagnosis and treatment. You will work within the Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership, a collaboration between UKHSA and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑level microbiological analysis of specimens to support clinical diagnosis.
• Perform bacteriological testing on samples referred from NHS and UKHSA laboratories.
• Utilise traditional methods and automated platforms to deliver accurate results in a timely manner.
• Support Consultant Microbiologists in delivering correct clinical diagnoses.
• Participate in national or international response activities such as bioterrorism incidents or major disease outbreaks.

Required profile

• Registered Biomedical Scientist with IBMS Specialist Diploma (post‑2005) or IBMS Fellowship in Medical Microbiology.
• Attention to detail and strong accuracy in laboratory work.
• Ability to work within a large, high‑throughput microbiology department.
