Biomedical Support Worker – Microbiology Lab

About the role

We are seeking a flexible, enthusiastic and self‑motivated Biomedical Support Worker to join the busy Microbiology Department at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. The role is based in a modern medical laboratory on the outskirts of Dumfries and offers full training for individuals without prior laboratory experience.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the microbiology team with routine sample processing and analysis.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, stock and cleanliness in accordance with health and safety standards.
• Record and report test results accurately using the laboratory information system.
• Support the completion of the Health Care Support Workers portfolio and, where applicable, the IBMS Level 1 portfolio.
• Work a rotating shift pattern covering early, late and weekend shifts (5 days over 7).

Required profile

• Enthusiasm for working in a clinical laboratory environment.
• Ability to follow detailed procedures and maintain high standards of accuracy.
• Willingness to undertake mandatory training and portfolio development.
• Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends.
