Bookkeeper – Manage Client Portfolios in Bishop's Stortford

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Bookkeeper to join a friendly, independent accountancy practice in Bishop's Stortford. You will own a portfolio of owner‑managed businesses, delivering accurate bookkeeping, VAT returns and payroll services while building long‑term client relationships.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a full client portfolio from onboarding to year‑end reporting.
• Prepare and maintain bookkeeping records using cloud accounting software.
• Submit VAT returns and ensure Making Tax Digital compliance.
• Produce management accounts, trial balances and year‑end statements.
• Process payroll, including PAYE, pensions and CIS where required.
• Act as the primary point of contact, offering practical advice and day‑to‑day support.
• Mentor junior team members and contribute ideas to improve internal processes.
• Work both from the office and on‑site with clients to deliver a high level of service.

Required profile

• AAT, ICB or equivalent qualification.
• Minimum five years of bookkeeping experience within a UK accountancy practice.
• Proven ability to manage an independent client portfolio.
• Excellent communication and client‑focused approach.
• Organised, proactive and able to work autonomously.

Required skills

• Strong working knowledge of Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or FreeAgent.
• Experience with cloud accounting software.
• Payroll processing, including PAYE, pensions and CIS.
