Category Manager – Builders Merchant (Hybrid, Birmingham)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Category Manager to join a leading builders merchant in Birmingham. The role is hybrid, requiring three days per week in the office, and offers a competitive salary with a car allowance.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers.
• Drive profitable sales and margin growth across the assigned category.
• Ensure product lines meet seasonal time‑frames.
• Source new suppliers and negotiate best cost prices.
• Present reports, figures and trend analysis to senior management.
• Develop the buying team to reach their career potential.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a Buyer or Senior Buyer in a fast‑moving retail environment, preferably within builders merchants or DIY.
• Strong influencing and negotiation abilities.
• Ability to adapt quickly in a fast‑paced market.
• Excellent communication skills across all organisational levels.
• Good working knowledge of budgets and managing conflicting projects.

Required skills

• Microsoft Office (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
