Chief Technology Officer

About the role

The Health and Safety Executive is seeking a senior technology leader to shape and deliver its digital and technology strategy. The Chief Technology Officer will ensure that technology underpins effective regulation, scientific capability, and evidence‑based decision making across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Own and evolve HSE’s enterprise technology strategy, aligning investment with regulatory, inspection, enforcement and scientific objectives.
• Act as senior technical authority, establishing enterprise architecture principles, technology standards and managing legacy risk and technical debt.
• Lead cyber‑security, resilience and technology risk programmes, ensuring secure handling of sensitive data and robust disaster‑recovery arrangements.
• Develop and operate governance and assurance frameworks, including architectural review boards and technical design authorities.
• Provide oversight of technology investment, ensuring public value, legality, resilience and long‑term sustainability.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in technology strategy and governance within complex, highly regulated environments.
• Strong judgement and ability to make evidence‑based decisions on technology risk and investment.
• Excellent communication skills to influence senior executives and external stakeholders.
