Consultant - Emergency & General Surgery

About the role

The Trust is seeking a Consultant in Emergency & General Surgery to join the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU). This full‑time role (11 Programmed Activities) supports the delivery of Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and integrates with the existing team of SEU consultants.

Key responsibilities

• Provide frontline consultant cover for emergency surgical admissions and supervise junior Emergency Surgical Team (EST) staff.
• Support CEPOD operating (07:30‑13:30), Emergency Surgery Ambulatory Clinics and Hot Clinics (09:00‑13:00).
• Participate in on‑call duties (Tuesday and Thursday nights 20:00‑08:00) and manage acute surgical admissions in SEU/A&E (13:30‑20:30).
• Maintain ownership of emergency and elective patients while contributing to the development of the SEU in line with SDEC policy.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of consultants, SPRs, SHOs and F1 doctors on a rolling rota.

Required profile

• Full GMC registration and FRCS (or equivalent) qualification.
• Extensive experience in emergency and general surgery at consultant level.
• Ability to supervise and mentor junior surgical staff.
