Consultant Psychiatrist

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join Cygnet Hospital Hexham on a full‑time basis. You will provide senior medical cover for the 10‑bed female PICU service on Franklin Ward, leading a multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality mental health care.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the provision of high‑quality care to patients on Franklin Ward.
• Develop and oversee patient treatment plans in collaboration with nurses, psychologists and occupational therapists.
• Conduct mental state examinations, investigations, diagnoses and treatment.
• Perform ward rounds, patient reviews and clinical audits.
• Implement risk assessment, risk management and embed clinical governance.
• Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and attend hearings.
• Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for patient transfers and leave approvals.
• Maintain accurate patient records and communicate regularly with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager.

Required profile

• Qualified Consultant Psychiatrist with full GMC registration.
• Significant experience in acute mental health settings, preferably PICU.
• Strong leadership and multidisciplinary team working skills.
• Ability to manage complex clinical governance and risk processes.
