Costs Negotiator / Budgeter – Legal Costs Management

About the role

The Costs Negotiator / Budgeter will manage the settlement of legal costs on clinical negligence claims, working closely with the NHSR team and wider Keoghs business. The role involves proactive case review, strategy development, and early negotiation with opponents while maintaining strong client relationships.

Key responsibilities

• Proactively review clinical negligence cases to develop a costs strategy and settlement parameters.
• Prepare and manage Points of Dispute, Precedent R and Precedent H documents.
• Negotiate settlements with opponents via telephone and liaise with insurers throughout the file.
• Instruct counsel, attend detailed assessment hearings, mediations and court applications.
• Monitor and report progress against client SLAs, KPIs and internal quality standards.

Required profile

• Minimum 12 months experience in a costs negotiator or budgeter role, handling own caseload.
• Degree and/or LPC and/or ALCD qualification.
• Experience of client liaison, providing advice verbally and in writing.
• Familiarity with the Detailed Assessment process and preparation of Points of Dispute.
• Strong telephone negotiation ability and understanding of current cost case law.
