Deputy Chief Information Security Officer

About the role

The Deputy Chief Information Security Officer will place cyber security at the heart of UK Defence, shaping and leading cyber risk strategy for critical digital capabilities. Reporting to the National Armaments Digital & Data CISO, you will influence senior leaders, embed secure‑by‑design principles and strengthen the resilience of systems that protect the nation.

Key responsibilities

• Set and lead cyber risk strategy across a complex digital environment, ensuring secure‑by‑design delivery.
• Establish and embed governance, risk and compliance frameworks aligned with Defence policy and emerging threats.
• Provide assurance on audit, compliance and reporting, applying core security principles consistently.
• Use data and tooling to enhance cyber insight, assess risk and inform the wider Defence picture.
• Act as a key cyber security lead within the Defence community, influencing stakeholders and building strong partnerships.
• Lead, develop and inspire a high‑performing cyber workforce, fostering a strong security culture.
• Oversee cyber incident response and risk management, ensuring robust incident response plans and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Extensive senior leadership experience in cyber security within large, complex organisations.
• Proven ability to influence senior leaders and act as a trusted advisor.
• Strong understanding of secure‑by‑design principles, governance, risk and compliance.
• Experience managing cyber incident response and risk mitigation programmes.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
