Deputy Director of Communications and Engagement

About the role

The New Hospital Programme is delivering over 40 modern hospitals across England. We are seeking a senior leader to shape how this transformational programme communicates, collaborates and engages with staff, partners and the public.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a unified communications and engagement function across the programme.
• Develop and deliver a programme‑wide communications and engagement plan.
• Promote the New Hospital Programme through media, events, conferences and digital channels.
• Oversee major announcements, programme events and ensure consistent messaging.
• Drive collaboration with NHS Trusts, contractors and system partners.
• Lead internal engagement initiatives to foster a positive programme culture.
• Work with DHSC and NHS England to align messaging across the wider health system.
• Manage, develop and mentor the communications and engagement team.
• Ensure high‑quality internal and external communications while managing risks, issues and the communications budget.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in communications and stakeholder engagement, preferably within the public or health sector.
• Demonstrated ability to develop strategic communication plans and execute fast‑paced reactive activities.
• Experience working across government, NHS organisations and external partners.
• Strong budget management and risk mitigation skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a focus on clarity and impact.
