Design Manager – Refurbishment Projects

About the role

We are seeking a Design Manager to lead the design of large‑scale social housing refurbishment projects, including high‑rise and high‑risk schemes, for a leading construction contractor based in Hatfield. The role combines technical leadership from pre‑construction through to construction with responsibility for tender support and design coordination.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design process from concept through construction, taking full technical responsibility for assigned projects.
• Provide design and technical input during single and two‑stage tendering.
• Coordinate and, where required, line‑manage Assistant Design Coordinators or Senior Design Coordinators.
• Ensure design complies with fire safety, structural remediation and building legislation.
• Program design activities using Asta Powerproject or Microsoft Project and maintain the Common Data Environment.

Required profile

• Proven experience in social housing planned works, regeneration and complex refurbishment schemes.
• Strong understanding of reinforced concrete, timber, structural steel and load‑bearing masonry construction.
• Knowledge of JCT, PPC and NEC contract suites.
• Ability to work across design, procurement and construction sequencing.
• Commitment to continuous learning and development.
