Development Underwriter – Care Sector

About the role

Markel is expanding its Care sector team in Scotland and is looking for commercially‑minded Development Underwriters who thrive on market interaction, broker relationship building and new‑business generation. The role blends underwriting expertise with a broker‑facing approach to grow the company’s specialist care portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Grow market presence by building and strengthening broker relationships, identifying and winning new business opportunities, and raising awareness of Markel’s care proposition.
• Deliver profitable growth by underwriting and negotiating new risks within authority, managing a strong pipeline, and meeting annual new‑business targets.
• Collaborate with underwriting, distribution and operational teams, share market insight, support the development of the Care proposition and act as a trusted partner to brokers and internal stakeholders.

Required profile

• Background in development underwriting, commercial underwriting, care‑sector underwriting, specialist insurance or broker development.
• Commercial underwriting experience within the care or social‑welfare sector, or a strong commercial approach and growth mindset.
• Proven track record of generating new business and confidence working autonomously across a large territory.

Required skills

• Strong relationship‑building and networking skills.
• Excellent negotiation, trading and stakeholder‑management abilities.
• Effective communication and the ability to influence both brokers and internal teams.
