Environmental Health Officer – Pollution Control

About the role

Join the City of London Corporation’s Port Health and Public Protection Division as an experienced Environmental Health Officer specialising in pollution control and private rented sector housing. You will deliver both proactive and reactive environmental protection services across the Square Mile, influencing policy and safeguarding public health.

Key responsibilities

• Lead on complex pollution control cases, including construction noise and infrastructure impacts.
• Conduct risk‑based inspections, review licensing and planning applications, and manage high‑impact complaints.
• Assess out‑of‑hours noisy work applications (e.g., Section 61) and prepare enforcement notices, technical reports, and committee briefings.
• Investigate private‑sector housing enforcement cases and carry out HHSRS assessments.
• Supervise junior officers, mentor students, and represent the City in professional forums.
• Participate in the out‑of‑hours Duty Manager rota and undertake occasional work outside core hours.

Required profile

• Degree in Environmental Health and registration with the EHORB.
• Proven experience in pollution control, construction noise and infrastructure impacts.
• Knowledge of private‑sector housing enforcement and HHSRS assessments.
• Excellent written and verbal communication with experience drafting notices and technical documents.
• Strong stakeholder management and inter‑agency collaboration skills.
• Desirable: postgraduate qualification in acoustics or related discipline.
