Facilities Maintenance Operative

About the role

The Facilities Maintenance Operative will ensure the workplace remains safe, functional and presentable by carrying out general maintenance, minor repairs and basic mechanical support. Working a 40‑hour week, Monday to Friday, you will support both planned preventative maintenance and ad‑hoc tasks across the site.

Key responsibilities

• Perform minor repairs, adjustments and basic carpentry, ironmongery, fixtures, fittings and furniture repairs.
• Maintain clean and orderly maintenance areas, plant rooms, workshops and equipment stores.
• Provide basic mechanical engineering support – inspection, adjustment, lubrication, simple component replacement and fault finding.
• Coordinate and supervise external contractors for on‑site maintenance and service visits.
• Assist the industrial process and production team with engineering‑related tasks and mentor apprentices.
• Support planned preventative maintenance programmes to reduce reactive repairs.

Required profile

• Practical experience in facilities, estates or property maintenance, building repairs or workshop support.
• Familiarity with LOTOTO principles, permit‑to‑work systems, contractor controls and safe isolation procedures.
• Relevant mechanical engineering qualification, apprenticeship, City & Guilds, NVQ, BTEC, HNC or equivalent hands‑on experience.

Required skills

• Basic carpentry and ironmongery.
• Installation and repair of fixtures, fittings, locks and door furniture.
• Furniture and shelving repair.
• Basic mechanical engineering tasks – inspection, adjustment, lubrication, component replacement.
• Basic fault finding on mechanical plant and equipment.
