Finance Manager

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Finance Manager to join a well‑established civil engineering firm in Wakefield. Reporting directly to the Directors, you will own the full spectrum of accounting activities and lead a small team of junior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare monthly management accounts and report to Directors and year‑end accountants.
• Produce cash‑flow forecasts and recommend process improvements.
• Liaise with suppliers and operations team, reconcile statements and resolve invoice queries.
• Manage Sage Projects to capture project costs, monitor resources and produce profit‑and‑loss reports.
• Oversee purchase and sales ledger, input payroll information and journal entries.
• Assist with stock control, post accruals, pre‑payment schedules and inter‑group recharges.
• Maintain fixed‑asset registers and prepare VAT returns for HMRC.
• Supervise two junior accounts administrators.
• Oversee company insurance administration.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a similar finance/accounting role within an SME.
• Experience preparing management accounts, cash‑flow reporting and VAT returns.
• Strong attention to detail and excellent organisational abilities.
• Proactive attitude with ownership of tasks.
• No formal accountancy qualification required; AAT or equivalent experience acceptable.
• Experience in the construction or civil engineering sector is advantageous but not essential.
