General Operative – Multi‑Skilled Operative (Shift)

About the role

We are seeking a General Operative to join our Sheffield production team at Progress Rail Services UK. The role involves operating machinery, hand tools and plant equipment to support the rail manufacturing process on a rotating shift pattern.

Key responsibilities

• Follow instructions from the Team Leader or Production Supervisor.
• Measure and assemble wing rails onto manganese steel crossings to precise tolerances.
• Use hand grinding tools such as angle grinders and die grinders.
• Operate overhead cranes to move rails and components safely.
• Carry out dye‑penetrant testing and basic weld repair tasks.
• Assist with dispatch duties when required.
• Adhere to company quality, safety and environmental procedures.

Required profile

• Awareness of health, safety, environmental and quality standards.
• Self‑motivated with the ability to adapt to changing production priorities.
• Basic engineering qualification or relevant experience.
• Ability to read and work from engineering drawings.
• Capable of working under pressure to meet deadlines.

Required skills

• Proficiency with measuring tools (scale meter, tape, gauges, templates).
• Experience using hand grinding tools (angle grinder, die grinder).
• Overhead crane operation.
• Dye‑penetrant testing.
• Basic welding repair techniques.
