Head of Departmental Planning and Performance

About the role

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is seeking a senior leader to head its Departmental Planning and Performance function. This role will shape strategy, monitor performance, and provide assurance on the delivery of ministerial priorities across one of the UK’s largest public organisations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead strategic planning, performance management and assurance for DWP, delivering clear insight on risk, performance and deliverability to ministers and the Executive Team.
• Oversee the production of the Departmental Quarterly Performance Report and refresh the DWP Strategic Plan.
• Provide analysis and advice during fiscal events such as Budgets, Spending Reviews and Spring Statements.
• Support performance reporting to the centre of government and ensure alignment with HM Treasury expectations.
• Build capability within the team, fostering an inclusive, high‑performing culture.

Required profile

• Proven experience in strategic planning, performance management, assurance, governance or corporate strategy within a large organisation.
• Strong analytical judgement with the ability to translate complex data into practical advice.
• Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, comfortable working with senior leaders.
• Demonstrated ability to balance strategic thinking with delivery focus.
