Head of Finance – Permanent Role

About the role

The Head of Finance will report to the Vice‑Principal Finance and Resources and lead the finance function of Derwentside College. This senior position combines strategic financial leadership with hands‑on operational responsibility to support the college’s growth and high‑quality teaching.

Key responsibilities

• Produce high‑quality monthly management accounts and performance reports.
• Manage cash flow, financial controls, statutory returns and year‑end accounts.
• Lead the annual budgeting, forecasting and financial planning processes.
• Oversee external audit activity and support internal audit requirements.
• Provide financial insight and challenge to senior leaders, budget holders and governors.
• Maintain and improve financial systems and processes.
• Lead, develop and inspire the finance team.

Required profile

• Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA).
• Strong management accounting and strategic planning capability.
• Experience in cash‑flow management, balance‑sheet reconciliations and financial controls.
• Proven audit, governance and risk‑management experience.
• Excellent communication and collaborative approach.
• Proactive attitude to continuous improvement and team development.
