Head of Prosecutions (Criminal Lawyer)

About the role

The Head of Prosecutions will lead the RSPCA's criminal prosecution team, driving strategy and ensuring robust, ethical case outcomes. Reporting to the Chief Legal Counsel, you will work both from home and the London/Horsham offices on a hybrid basis.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert legal advice on criminal law, evidence and procedure to the Board, Trustees and Chief Legal Counsel.
• Oversee high‑profile, media‑sensitive cases and manage associated risks.
• Represent the Prosecutions team during organisational change, ensuring stability and clear communication.
• Manage departmental budgets, maximise court cost recovery and uphold quality assurance across all cases.
• Collaborate with other departments to align prosecution decisions with broader organisational objectives.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in criminal law or prosecution.
• Strong strategic thinking and ability to navigate complex, high‑stakes environments.
• Resilient, ethical and able to maintain the RSPCA’s reputation under public scrutiny.
• Excellent communication skills for advising senior stakeholders.
