Head of Prosecutions (Criminal Solicitor)

About the role

The RSPCA is seeking a Head of Prosecutions to lead its criminal law team in protecting animal welfare. Reporting to the Chief Legal Counsel, you will guide a senior group of solicitors through complex prosecutions, ensuring robust, ethical, and transparent outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert legal counsel on criminal law, evidence and procedure to the Board, Trustees and Chief Legal Counsel.
• Oversee high‑profile, media‑sensitive cases involving animal welfare crimes.
• Lead the Prosecutions team through organisational change, maintaining stability and clarity.
• Manage departmental budgets, maximise court cost recovery and ensure quality assurance across all cases.
• Collaborate with other departments to align prosecution strategy with broader organisational goals.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor with extensive experience in criminal prosecution, preferably within animal welfare or related public interest law.
• Demonstrated leadership of senior legal professionals in a fast‑moving environment.
• Strong strategic thinking, resilience and the ability to handle public and media scrutiny.
• Excellent communication skills for advising senior stakeholders and representing the team.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of criminal law, evidence rules and court procedures.
• Budget management and financial oversight of legal services.
• Ability to produce clear, persuasive legal advice and briefing documents.
